Best Bakeries of Kansas City

Because some of the best foods in the metro is coming from bakers.

Lenexa residents have had the good life for years, what with Black Dog Coffeehouse serving Ibis Bakery products such as French-inspired croissants, palmiers, financiers, tarts and kouign amanns, as well as American classics such as doodles, pecan pie bars and chocolate chip cookies and artisanal loaves of sourdough and orchard bread since 2014. Finally, in the fall of 2017, downtown Kansas Citians were rewarded for their patience with the Messenger Coffee cafe — a beautiful, light-filled, three-story building that gives Chris and Kate Matsch, the husband and wife behind Ibis Bakery, the chance to flex their pastry muscles like never before.

Wednesday through Sunday, get in line early if you want to snag one of those sublime fresh-milled baguettes or pop in for a hot breakfast or lunch from the kitchen. You could spend an entire day here perched on the Messenger rooftop next to the fireplace or nestled into one of the various alcoves with a good book, a latte and, say, a mulled wine-pear-frangipane tart.

Best bet: If you see a piña colada croissant in the display case, grab one (or five). It’ll change your life. If you’re dining in, go for the bacon tartine; the pork is cured in-house.

Swoon Cookie Crafters knows it best: Cookies make people happy — especially frosted sugar cookies decorated by expert hands. Pop into the Westside shop for cute treats that coincide with the season, or surprise your sweetheart with a dozen of these couture cookies in the shape of his or her face.

Best bet: You’re going to get a frosted sugar cookie from Swoon, and it’s going to make your day.

The pastries and desserts at Mud Pie are worthy of praise without any other qualifiers, but it’s worth mentioning that everything in the case at this quirky Volker shop is 100 percent vegan. Yes, including the savory scones, danishes, blueberry crumbles and divine carrot cake. If it sounds hard to believe, wait until you try the goods; you won’t believe your taste buds.

Best bet: If there’s no dairy in the donuts at Mud Pie, they must be using unicorn dust because these things are magical.

Banksia Scones

If you’re unfamiliar with the idiosyncratic glory of Australian pastry, get yourself to Banksia. Husband-wife team (and Aussie imports) Rob and Kate Joseph took over the former Sasha’s Baking Co. in downtown Kansas City in April, and their unique bakery items such as sausage rolls, beef brisket hand-pies and a delightful cookie-marshmallow treat known as an iced VoVo became an instant hit.

Best bet: Get the complex (and addictive) kangaroo sausage roll, which boasts Australian native bush spices, caramelized onions and flavors of cocoa, sage, rosemary and juniper berries.
