“Kansas City, we are beyond excited and humbled to announce the reopening of Betty Rae’s this spring under new ownership,” the Facebook post reads. “As a former long-time employee myself, it was and is evident how much the shops mean to employees and customers alike. The shops would not be the same without the passion, creativity, and character of former employees that have played an important role in the success and quality of Betty Rae’s. Alongside me are a few of the familiar faces excited to join in this new chapter.”

The new owner, who wrote the Facebook post, is named Alec.

In December, allegations about various forms of misconduct surfaced on social media against the previous Betty Rae’s owner, David Friesen, and were published by the Tony’s Kansas City blog and other local media outlets. (The allegations were serious but unverified, and have since been removed—many appeared in a now-deleted Google document by an anonymous author who claimed to be a former employee titled “Boycott Betty Rae’s.”)

On January 12, the ice cream shop reported in a Facebook post that it would close its River Market and Waldo establishments indefinitely.

“We’re currently looking for working capital and waiting on the 2nd wave of PPP loans, but the margins were too tight and we would never risk not making payroll, which means we’ll have to remain closed,” read a Facebook post from the ice cream shop’s account.

There is no set date for the reopening, but once there is you can expect people to start lining up.
