Destination Wedding: Cancun

A Kansas City couple's gorgeous beach wedding in Mexico

The start of Lisa and Greg Dean’s love story was less than thrilling. A mutual friend set them up, and their first date was in the middle of a snowstorm at a now-closed bar. “It wasn’t super romantic, like she tripped and fell and I caught her,” Greg says. “It was kind of boring.”

Their wedding, however, was anything but. Friends and family who attended the destination wedding in Cancun, Mexico, on June 26, 2017, are still telling the Deans how epic it was.

The weekend leading up to the Monday wedding was spent at all-inclusive resort Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun, which hosts around 460 weddings each year. The resort provided the Deans everything they needed for the wedding, including a wedding planner, a travel agent and a videographer. The couple flew out their own photographer and hairstylist.

With the all-inclusive wedding package, the Deans didn’t have to worry about details like decorating the venues or finding rides from the airport to the resort. Rather, they and their 48 guests could relax at the massive resort until the main event. With several bars and restaurants, a pool, a beach and more, guests were able to spend time as they wanted. “We wanted a wedding that had a vacation within it for our family and friends,” Greg says.

In addition to a relaxing weekend, the Deans surprised their guests with a jaw-dropping dress rehearsal — in 10,000-year-old Alux Cave. The Deans rented vans, loaded up guests and drove to the beautiful venue, but none of the guests knew the venue was a cave until they stepped inside. “We didn’t want people to regret going down there, Greg says, “so we knew we had to make it fun and go all-out.”

They certainly did. After the intimate beach wedding with a mood-setting Caribbean trio, everyone enjoyed a sunset dinner and a lively after-party on Tequila Terrace, which overlooked the ocean. The Deans hired a local DJ, and Greg says there were consistently about 45 people on the dance floor all night. Both agree it was their favorite part of the weekend.

“It was all perfect,” Lisa says. “I wouldn’t have done it any other way.”
