Inside My Closet
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU?
I live the life of a busy, working, single mom. I get my 4-year-old son Gus off to preschool and then I get to work. As a public relations manager at Sprint for the last 12 years, I promote Sprint’s employee programs, diversity efforts and community affairs. Whether at the office or working from home, I spend my day writing and editing, facilitating media interviews and providing counsel to internal clients. I usually fit in a trip to the gym over lunch.
WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
I’m wearing a Michael Kors dress from Zappos.com, Frye boots from their flagship store in Soho in New York City, Charming Charlie earrings and bracelets from Express and Charming Charlie.
WHY DO YOU LOVE IT?
It fits well, it’s comfortable and I can wear it to work or dress it up with jewelry for a night out. Finding evening clothes is always a challenge. It’s hard to find something with a little extra sparkle to wear on a date or out with friends without looking like a “Real Housewife of Orange County.”
WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP?
Online at Zappos.com, Piperlime, Bluefly, and the Nordstrom website and store.
WHAT ARE FIVE STYLING TIPS YOU MIGHT OFFER?
• Find an oversized bag that can work as a purse but also fits your laptop and lunch. No matter how cute your outfit is, you look like a pack mule if you’re carrying a purse, computer bag, gym bag and your lunch.
• Invest in a great pair of riding boots. A flat heel is key … it is very rare that someone can pull off a high-heeled boot with a skirt or skinny jeans.
• Take good care of your skin. Research products, find what you like and use them every day. You won’t regret it 10 years from now, but you will regret not using them.
• Do. Not. Wear. Powder. Go for dewy, not matte. You’ll thank me, I promise.
• Have fun with inexpensive accessories. I may love Frye boots and Louis Vuitton, but most of my jewelry is from Charming Charlie and Francesca’s.
HOW HAVE YOU ORGANIZED YOUR CLOSET AND WHAT PERSONAL TOUCHES HAVE YOU INCORPORATED?
I have great closet space and am an organized person, but I needed some help. I love to shop, so I have a lot of clothes and needed to be able to “see” them all better. A coworker recommended Cheryl Murray at OrganizingEtc., and when I called I realized she was my favorite teacher from high school! She’s come in twice now to color-coordinate and display my clothing and accessories in a way that lets me easily see what I have. I once heard an organizer say that we wear 10 percent of our clothes 90 percent of the time. That was me. My closet now allows me to see all 100 percent.
My clothes are categorized and color-coordinated. My jewelry is pinned on cork board for easy viewing and selection, and my other accessories are also on display. Many of these items were previously in drawers or bins, which made it easy to forget what I had. The color coordination and display makes it almost look like a little boutique that I get to shop in every day.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FASHION SPLURGE?
A beautiful Clare Vivier clutch from Standard Style Boutique. It’s a soft, tan leather with a wide pink stripe down the middle. LOVE!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN KANSAS CITY?
I love that my friends and family are all here, and I love that Kansas City feels like both a big city and a small town. I had the quintessential Kansas City upbringing, and I’m so appreciative of that. I went to Kansas City Kings basketball games weekly with my dad. I went to Loose Park as a child and field parties in high school. We may have lived in the ‘burbs, but even as teenagers we’d have lunch on the Plaza, shop in Westport, go to concerts at Starlight, and perhaps even (illegally) buy our beer on Southwest Boulevard. There really weren’t many helicopter parents back then, and we truly got to explore the city. I wish the same for my son … minus the beer.
