Leading by Example
The face of Dr. David Kaplan is a familiar one at Health Partnership of Johnson County, where for more than 10 years the Overland Park dermatologist has volunteered his services one day each month. While actively seeking a way to give back to the community, Kaplan discovered that there was a need for dermatology and skincare providers that was not being met by private health care and governmental programs.
Health Partnership of Johnson County is the only clinic in Johnson County dedicated to treating low income and uninsured residents.
“Giving back is what it’s all about,” he says “I’m just here with my staff plugging in those gaps. The people we meet here inspire us. They are the reason we continue to come back. We need to remember that we are not exempt from situations similar to those of the patients we treat here at the Health Partnership. Each time we visit the clinic and treat a new patient, I am reminded of how quickly the winds of fate can shift.”
Kaplan, for one, is familiar with uninvited change. After tragically losing his wife six years ago, he suddenly found himself a single father. He continues to work to maintain a new definition of a daily norm for his family.
“We have to lead by example,” he says.
And to that end, his two sons often join him at Health Partnership, seeing firsthand the effect that volunteering can have on society.
Kaplan enjoys hands-on involvement and accompanies his staff to Health Partnership each month to give back to the community by donating his dermatology services.
Staff member Lauren Davis says that Kaplan’s giving is not limited to the Johnson County residents seeking treatment at the clinic.
“He always treats everyone here to root beer floats at the end of the day,” Davis says. “We have a lot of fun. He’s so humble and generous that we all feel like we should really be doing something for him!”
Health Partnership of Johnson County will present All That Jazz on Aug. 29, 2009. The benefit, to be held at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel (at the Convention Center), is a major fundraiser for the Health Partnership Clinic. Featured guests include Bryan Busby and Wild Women of Kansas City. The evening begins at 6 p.m.
