RECAP: Opening Night at Kansas City Fashion Week

Last night at Union Station, Kansas City’s most influential fashion figures took photos on the red carpet, perused vendor booths and sipped on themed drinks like Five Farms Fashionista and Hussong’s Pink Stiletto. Kansas City Fashion Week is here, and the first official night of fall 2019 buzzed with excitement and anticipation of what this season’s runway will bring. Wednesday’s event showcased eight amazing designers — here’s a recap of each of their lines.

Fashion by Ayala

The event got off to a running start, thanks to Oak Park Designer Challenge Winner Jazmin Ayala and her fall line inspired by natural elements. Outfits flaunted botanical fabrics and feathers.

Sarah Wilson Knitwear

Sarah Wilson — also known as The Sexy Knitter — displayed a very memorable first outfit: a knit bridal dress with an attached veil. The rest of the line embraced draped knit garments edged out with metallic heels and gladiator sandals.

S.Bias

Sydney Bias’ compassion for sustainability was made evident in her line through recycled bandana fabric. Each monochromatic outfit had boyishly boxy and comfy look to it.

GK Designs

What I took away from Gracie Key’s line: Houndstooth, sheer and color. Though houndstooth tends to have a rigid look, this line felt very feminine — outfits were completed with dainty accessories like pearl necklaces, bows and pointed-toe pumps.

Fashion AF

Designer Annabelle Frese’s fall line was inspired by historic flight attendants. This meant oodles of pockets, scarves, showy lapels, shoulder pads and buttons. The red eyeliner on the models was a nice touch and emulated wings.

Annette Sunshine Designs

This line was by far my favorite. It was diverse in color, flowy fabrics and abstract patterns. No two outfits looked the same.

Q Liu

A trip to London inspired Qun Liu’s fall line, and the results are grungy tomboy with a U.K. flair. We saw everything from graffiti garments and bowties to ruffles and Converse sneakers.

PERICHETTE

Peri Connor’s line was exclusively cinched-waist mini dresses, each one bearing its own traits. The breezy frocks revealed sheer fabric, open backs, flower details and Greek goddess prints.
