Olathe East sophomore softball pitcher Allison Stewart has been named the 2012 Gatorade Kansas Softball Player of the Year.

The 5-foot-11-inch sophomore was a tower of strength on the mound and at the plate. She was the winning pitcher in the Hawks’ 5-2 win over Olathe South in the Class 6A state championship game.

She had a 13-0 pitching record with a 0.20 ERA. She struck out 118 hitters in 69 1/3-innings of work. Stewart just allowed 28 hits, walked nine and pitched two no-hitters.
At the plate, she batted .532 with five home runs and a school-record 52 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .873.

Stewart also excelled in the classroom with a 4.0 grade point average. In addition, she volunteered locally at a homeless shelter and food bank and as a young mentor and youth softball coach.

Jon Pittenger, long-time Blue Valley North baseball coach, has been honored by the Kansas Baseball Coaches Association as the Class 6A Coach of the Year.

Pittenger led his Mustangs to the 6A state championship, beating BV West 1-0 in the title game.

“When you get an award like that it is based on the performance of the kids,” says Pittenger. “I give all the credit to them.”

Pittenger has been the head baseball coach at BV North for 19 years. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North and the University of Missouri. He played baseball at both schools and was drafted out of Missouri by the Minnesota Twins. He played one year in the Twins minor league system.

This is his second state championship. His 1997 team won the 5A state title.

A total of 13 area players were named to the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association’s All-State girls soccer teams.
Making the Class 6A All-State team were Blue Valley North freshman forward Parker Roberts, Blue Valley West senior midfielder Alexis Aiman and Blue Valley Northwest junior midfielder Emily Herndon, Blue Valley West senior defender Madison Aiman and Blue Valley Northwest sophomore defender Haley Sutter.

Alexis Aiman was also picked as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All American.
There are a total of eight area players on the 5A All-State team highlighted by state champion St. Thomas Aquinas with four players—sophomore midfielder Mary Disidore, freshman forward Jamie Kutey, sophomore forward Hannah Pyle and senior defender Tessie Zarse.

The other area all-staters are Blue Valley senior keeper Erin Mitchell, Blue Valley Southwest senior midfielder MacKenzie Baird, BV Southwest sophomore forward Amanda Creason and BV Southwest junior defender Emily Eldridge.
