Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding

Nestled in the heart of Westport, Pot Pie is charming and quaint with eclectic menu offerings and a refined wine list. But for us, the crème de la crème on the chalkboard menu was far and away the chocolate chip bread pudding with crème anglaise. With a base of dense cake served warm, laced with rich chocolate and topped with a smooth vanilla sauce, this dessert is a perfect trifecta. Creatively concocted with a hint of nostalgia, this little indulgence is comfort food at its finest. Grab a spoon and dive in. You won’t regret it.

Carrot Cake
J. Alexander’s, Overland Park, Kan.
You may come for the steak, but you’ll stay for the carrot cake. That’s right, J. Alexander’s carrot cake is far and away a 435 Magazine favorite. Seven bucks gets you an enormous slice of warm carrot cake, dripping in ooey gooey cream cheese frosting. Enhanced with the comforting flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg and the captivating crunch of finely chopped walnuts, this carrot cake will have even the most dedicated chocoholics crossing over to the other side. And even though, in theory, a slice of J. Alexander’s’ carrot cake is big enough for two or three people to share, you won’t want to share. Eat it warm and eat it all. It’s a sensory experience.

Try as we might, we could not narrow down our selection to just one perfect pie at The Upper Crust. Strawberry, blackberry cream and gooseberry, oh my! You really can’t go wrong, no matter your selection. With locations in Westport (in the basement of Pryde’s) and downtown Overland Park on Santa Fe, the Upper Crust is a Kansas City favorite for all types of baked goods, but in our opinion, the pie is this bakery’s ultimate sweet spot. Made from scratch with the freshest ingredients, The Upper Crust’s pies are a little slice of heaven. It’s pie as good as Grandma’s … maybe even better.
