These Leawood milkshakes are totally insane

In May, Blue Chip Cookies in Leawood debuted its “extreme milkshakes” — obnoxiously decadent desserts that seem designed to both delight and horrify customers. Naturally, these skyscraper monstrosities with lurid colors and over-the-top garnishes called to me like a siren song.

There are four options: Death by Chocolate and Cookie Monster are for chocolate lovers, and Party Time and The Circus are for fans of fruit flavors and candy. Aside from the zany toppings, the base milkshake is pretty standard: A scoop of Ashby’s ice cream is blended with milk and poured into a glass. Then comes the madness.

The teenager behind the counter stoically took my order for the Death by Chocolate and The Circus milkshakes, scooping ice cream — a rich fudge flavor called Michigan Pot Hole for the Death by Chocolate and a cotton candy flavor for The Circus — into tin cups and disappearing into the kitchen. Ten minutes later, I found myself looking diabetes straight in the face.

Death by Chocolate is the most popular extreme milkshake at Blue Chip. The outside of the glass is coated in miniature M&M’s and Hershey’s chocolate bricks, then topped with whipped cream, fudge, more M&M’s, a chocolate wafer, a Blue Chip frosted chocolate chip cookie and a cherry for good measure. But The Circus — studded with vanilla icing and neon pink sprinkles, plus frosted animal cookies, two sparkling rock candy suckers and a mountain of fluffy pink-and-blue cotton candy — is a gut-busting sugar bomb guaranteed to make you smile.

Whatever flavor you choose, we’d recommend sharing one of these shakes with a friend.
