Where to find family meals to-go in Kansas City during the coronavirus pandemic

Service industry workers give up their holidays to feed us celebratory meals, serve us heavy-poured glasses of wine after a long week, slide us free desserts on our special days and lift our spirits around the dinner table.

Now, more than ever, they need our support during the coronavirus.

“Things have been difficult and stressful, as you can imagine,” says Alex George, executive chef at Webster House, which is currently closed other than their retail shop. “I have worked at Webster House for seven years and have never seen anything quite like this. The walk-in is sparse of products and my kitchen empty of any employees. People say the heart of any house is the kitchen; it is where people come together to share how their day went and to enjoy the company of their family. The same holds true in any restaurant kitchen. We banter back and forth, we cook and we serve. We are a family!”

Kansas City families are looking for places to eat, but all Kansas City restaurant dining rooms are closed. We’re just beginning to see the impacts that the novel coronavirus is having on businesses of all kinds in Kansas City. The Kansas City metro government announced on Monday that all bars and restaurants must close, and Mayor Quinton Lucas also suspended all gatherings of more than 10 people in Kansas City. Restaurants are now limited to carryout, drive-thru, pickup, and delivery services. You have probably looked at the list we reported on of over a thousand restaurants in the Kansas City metro that are now offering to-go options.

We all need to support local restaurants to preserve the wonderful restaurant community that has been created in Kansas City. However, ordering a to-go meal for a family a la carte style can be overwhelming and expensive. Of the restaurants that are still open, many of them are offering their dine-in options, but some have curated special family-friendly menus to make the ordering (and eating!) process easier.

Here is a list of some of the Family-Style Menu options available in Kansas City:
